Don't you just hate feeling bluesy? I found myself struggling through severe lows last week. Since I couldn't shake it by merely thinking myself out of it, I called on a few of my tried and true funk blasters to lift my spirits.
1. Yoga & Walking- Long walks and deep stretches not only help my body feel better, they allow me time to focus on positive thinking. Yin yoga practice is teaching me the discipline of stillness (if you know me well, you know this is a feat for me to master!), and it comes in handy when I'm not feeling 100%. Walking allows for fresh air, spotting beautiful things, and plenty of time to think about getting over myself.
2. Spreading some kindness- It goes something like this "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. ~Dalai Lama When it's hard to be nice and kind to myself, I do something nice and kind for someone else. I bake bread, write a love note, or do an extra chore or two for my sweetheart. I create a unique snail mail package for a friend. I call someone I haven't checked in on for a while. I smile, smile, smile, at people I pass. You get the idea.
3. Acting the way I want to feel- Gretchen Reuben insists in her book, The Happiness Project, that we can alter our mood by acting the way we want to feel. It involves a bit of mind tricking and convincing, but I promise you, it is worth a try. It has helped me get through tough days at work, and other challenging situations. Fake it till you make it, friend.
4. Sleep- When the funk is too heavy, and the rut is too low, I just crash out early and hope for peace in the morning. Sometimes a good sleep is really all you need.
How do you fight the funky blues? Got any tactics that take the edge off and fill your mind with sunshine? Pass em on!
